The formation of optical theory in Plato's Timaeus and Republic

The author analyses the conceptualisation of visual process in terms of general conditions of vision (Ti. 45b–47e) and in relation to χρῶμα (Ti. 67c–68e), connected with the analogy between the eye and the Sun and the ascent to the sunlight in the ‘Allegory of the Cave’ (Rep. 507c–509c and 514a–518c). Although vision itself is not purely extramissive but is mixed with the ‘body of daily light’—a form specially manufactured by the gods—a soul, in order to perceive the truth rationally, must avoid mingling with darkness, however an encounter with the light itself may be painful.

Keywords: Plato, Timaeus, the "Republic", optic theory, allegory of the cave
