Sources of the School Philosophical Theory of Language in the Byzantine Tradition of Education*

The Byzantine philosophical theory of language was formed and continuously transmitted throughout the entire thousand-year period of Byzantine history within the framework of the school form of the educational tradition that arose at least in the 5th–6th centuries in the Athenian and Alexandrian Neoplatonic philosophical schools, where it was presented in the basic course of logic, with which the teaching of philosophy began, or more precisely, in the practice of commentary on Aristotle's treatise "On Interpretation". The report discusses the surviving late antique and Byzantine commentaries on "On Interpretation", using their material to analyze the genre specificity of Byzantine commentaries – classical commentary, paraphrase, scholia, textbook, and the scope of their application in education. Available sources indicate that the standard of scientific quality was Ammonius' commentary on "On Interpretation", the most complete and complex. All other texts written in Byzantium were intended only to facilitate the procedures of assimilation of knowledge and memorization of educational material by students, while Ammonius' commentary could be used to clarify certain places and meanings by teachers and advanced students. The report separately covers the issue of the connection between the school philosophical theory of language and the Byzantine tradition of teaching grammar.

The Byzantine philosophical theory of language was formed and continuously transmitted throughout the entire thousand-year period of Byzantine history within the framework of the school form of the educational tradition that arose at least in the 5th–6th centuries in the Athenian and Alexandrian Neoplatonic philosophical schools, where it was presented in the basic course of logic, with which the teaching of philosophy began, or more precisely, in the practice of commentary on Aristotle's treatise "On Interpretation". As far as can be judged from the available sources, the basic for the entire Byzantine tradition is the large commentary of the scholarch of the Alexandrian philosophical school Ammonius of Alexandria (between 435/445 – between 517/526), ​​published, unlike others, in the author's edition. In addition to Ammonius's commentary, two short commentaries of the Alexandrian school have survived, almost three times shorter than Ammonius's text, by Stephanus of Alexandria (second half of the 6th – early 7th century) and by an anonymous author, which his publisher Leonardo Taran dates to the end of the 6th or 7th century. Both of them depend on Ammonius. In addition to the late antique commentaries on "On Interpretation", several genuine Byzantine commentaries, paraphrases, and scholia have survived. First of all, these are the paraphrase of Michael Psellos (1018 – c. 1078 or the 90s of the 11th century) and the commentary of Leo Magentinus (probably second half of the 12th – early 13th century), which were very unsuccessfully published by Aldus Manutius in Venice in 1503 together with Ammonius's commentary. Both texts are three times shorter than Ammonius's commentary and generally follow his presentation of the material. In addition to these Byzantine texts, there is also a collection of scholia on "On Interpretation", preserved in the codex Vaticanus graecus 244 and again attributed to Leo Magentinus. This collection, like his other collections of scholia on the Organon, unlike the aforementioned commentary on "On Interpretation", consists of a general introduction, built on the model of the Alexandrian commentaries on Aristotle, and a collection of short scholia on individual passages in Aristotle's text, and it is not directly oriented towards Ammonius, but presumably represents a reworking of more ancient scholia of various origins. In addition to this collection, there is also a collection of scholia preserved in the codex Parisinus graecus 1917, attributed in the margins to Michael of Ephesus (known in the first half of the 12th century), which are fragments of a paraphrase of Psellos. Both of these scholia have not been published, as has not yet been published the commentary on De Interpretation by George Pachymeres (1242 – c. 1310), which is part of his large commentary on the entire Organon. In addition, one can mention a very condensed reproduction of some of the main concepts presented in De Interpretation in the famous "Brief Exposition of Logic" by Nicephoros Blemmydes (1197-1269). The described tradition of selecting educational texts was decided to be interrupted in the 1430s by Gennadius Scholarius. In teaching Aristotle's philosophy, he focused mainly on Latin commentaries translated by himself, which caused active rejection in the intellectual community of Constantinople. In this regard, in a letter to Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos, Scholarius asked to protect him from unfair attacks, and explained in detail the reasons for his preference for Latin commentaries over Greek and Arabic, considering them more complete and complete. In the report, based on the material of commentaries on "On Interpretation", the genre specificity of Byzantine commentaries is analyzed - classical commentary, paraphrase, scholium, textbook, and the scope of their application in education. Available sources indicate that the standard of scientific quality was Ammonius' commentary on "On Interpretation", the most complete and complex. All other texts written in Byzantium were intended only to facilitate the procedures of assimilation of knowledge and memorization of material by students, and it was precisely these goals that even Gennadius Scholarius actually justified his attempt at reform in the Latin style. At the same time, Ammonius' commentary could be used to clarify certain places and meanings by teachers and advanced students.
